Karen Schriver is a consultant, researcher, and educator in information design. A frequent speaker to audiences around the world, Karen’s work focuses on understanding the needs of stakeholders and on exploring expertise in communication design. Her book, Dynamics in Document Design: Creating Texts for Readers, now in its 9th printing, is regarded as an essential work in the field. Winner of nine awards for research and communication design, Karen has taught at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA), University of Utrecht (Netherlands), University of Washington (Seattle, Washington, USA), and University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). She serves on the board of directors of the Center for Plain Language (Washington, D.C.) and the Communications Research Institute (Melbourne, Australia). She studies professional communication with the European Research Network (Poitiers, France). She is an editor for Technical Communication and the Information Design Journal. Her recent research investigates (1) the nature of expertise in information design, and (2) how the design of text and graphics influences how people read online.

Yuri Engelhardt is Assistant Professor in Mediastudies and Information Visualization at the University of Amsterdam, and lecturer in Information Graphics at the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design, in the Netherlands. Yuri is interested in principles underlying the visual communication of information, from ancient pictorial inscriptions to interactive data visualizations. He combines his expertise concerning diagrams, graphics, information visualization and visual language theory with his desire to do something useful concerning social and environmental issues. Yuri is founder and moderator (1995-1999) of 'InfoDesign', the first electronic forum on information design. He is contributor and program committee member for the international 'Diagrams' conferences, and member of the Editorial Board of the Information Design Journal (1999-present). Yuri holds an MA degree in medicine, and a Ph.D. in computer science.

Dra. Ruth Emília Nogueira

Professor Nogueira holds a degree in Cartography from UFPR and a master degree in Geography at UFSC. She is a Doctor on Forest Sciences at UFPR. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), and coordinates the Laboratory on Tactile Cartography (LabTATE). She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Geography Department of UFSC. Her research topics are: Geography and Educational Process and Environmental Analysis. She also teaches at the graduated program of Civil Engineering at UFSC. Vice-President of the School Cartography Commission of the Brazilian Society of Cartography, Geodesic, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensoring.

Dr. Meira holds a degree in Pedagogy from the Recife School of Philosophy (1984). He is a master in Cognitive Psychology by Federal University of Pernambuco (1987), He is an EdD. in Mathematics by University of California at Berkeley (1991). He is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UFPE. He is a researcher in the Graduate Program in Cognitive Psychology in the same institution. He is an expert in Psychology of Human Development, and works with the topics: Sense Production Processes, Interaction Analysis, Information Technology and the Internet. He was a CNPq researcher from 1992 to 2007, and has a grant on Research and Technological Development of SOFTEX (2008-). He is consultant of C.E.S.A.R (The Recife Center for Studies and Advanced Systems), a non-profit organization connected to the UFPE Center of Computing, and works in the development of processes and digital environments for education and social networks.

Lucia Gouvêa Pimentel

She holds a degree in Education in Visual Arts by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1982), and a master degree by the same UFMG (1993). She is a PhD in Arts by University of São Paulo (1999). She is a full professor at UFMG. She is the Secretary General of the Latin American Council for Art Education – CLEA. She is a member the World Council of InSEA, the Group of Experts in Art Education, Culture and Citizenship of the Ibero-American States Organization – OEI, and a member of the CAPES Evaluation Committee. Her topics are: Art Education and Engraving, Visual Arts, Art Technology and Engraving.
